Music Without Love

Last week a friend of mine, was talking to me, and we got into a little battle of the thoughts. He asked me why I looked deep into my music, why don’t I just sit back and enjoy it. I know him and he’s a mainstream music lover, and doesn’t care if the musician he listens to put love into his work. I told him I look deep into it because music, to me, is nothing without love. If the artist has no love for it and puts music out solely for the purpose of making money, that it shouldn’t be called music. Now I thought this would have been a strong enough statement to let my friend stop there with, but he didn’t he said that I didn’t know what music was made for (which hit me hard), he said it was made just to listen to, and not look deeply into. I started to get into argument with him on this, because he told me I didn’t know music, I told him music today is infused with poetics so the artist want us to listen to what they have to say and dig deep into it finding out the songs true meaning. But he keep stating the same statement over and over knowing it wouldn’t help him win. Nobody won the fight (just so you know) but it tick me off because he’s is a prime example of the stubborn musical listener of the mainstream radio today.
